Rue finds herself in trouble with a drug dealer who she owes money to in season three

It's been more than four years since the troubled teens of East Highland High School were last on our screens and now the long-awaited show returns on 12 April for a third season.

The latest trailer sees the characters leave the classroom behind and follows them in early adulthood. It picks up five years after the last episode and promises more drama, drugs and betrayal.

The HBO series starring Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi follows a group of young adults navigating sex and drug addiction, love, friendship and trauma.

In December, showrunner Sam Levinson said he feels "strongly this is our best season yet".

What is in the new trailer?

In the first trailer that dropped in January, Rue, played by Zendaya, finds herself in trouble with Laurie, the notorious drug dealer from the previous season.

In the new trailer, we realise Laurie is not the only person after her as she tells her that someone called Alamo is trying to kill her and he will kill Laurie too.

At the start of the trailer Rue is being interviewed by drug enforcement agents who ask her if she's ever been to Mexico. We then see her in Mexico being made to swallow something suspicious.

Later, one police officer tells her she's "a good kid in a bad situation".

Sweeney's Cassie is an adult content creator married to Elordi's Nate, who appears to have got himself into some problems.

We get a glimpse of Cassie walking down the aisle and Levinson has previous said the pair's wedding will be "unforgettable" for viewers.

The most shocking part of the trailer is that he see Cassie's former best friend Maddy (Alexa Demie) reappear in her life and is helping her film her adult content.

Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, is in art school trying to make it as a painter and is also a so-called sugar baby, seen going on dates with older men.

Levinson told an event in December that the series will pick up five years after the last one which "felt like a natural place because if they'd gone to college they'd be out of college at that time."

He also gave an update on where each character will start off.

Speaking about Cassie, he said: "She's very addicted to social media and envious of what appears to be the big lives that all of her high school classmates are living at this point in time."

He added that Lexi, played by Maude Apatow, will be "an assistant to a show runner played by Sharon Stone".

There will be eight episodes in season three, with the finale airing on Sunday 31 May.

Fezco's storyline in season two ended on a cliff-hanger

Cloud's death and Hollywood strikes halted production of the show's third season, which was due to start filming in December 2023.

It's not yet known how Cloud's absence will affect storylines in the season.

Domingo, who plays Ali on the show, told Vanity Fair in 2024 that Fezco's character was originally going to feature strongly in the series.

He said he was "sure it affected not only the creation of season three, because [Angus] was going to be a very strong part of it... we came together as a cast many times to grieve, to mourn, to laugh and enjoy all the things we know about Angus."

Some of the cast have also been propelled into stardom in recent years - Zendaya has starred in Dune, Spider-Man, The Drama and Challengers while Elordi was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Frankenstein and starred alongside Margot Robbie in Wuthering Heights.
