Part of the M60 remains closed in both directions for a second day after an eight-vehicle crash.

The ring road remains closed after the pile up involving three lorries, two cars and a van at about 11:30 BST on Monday between junction 25 for the Bredbury Interchange and junction 1 for the Pyramid Roundabout in Stockport.

One lorry had driven through the central reservation and hit several lamp posts while another had shed its load of beer barrels.

By 09:00, National Highways said recovery work for the damaged vehicles was complete and any road users caught within the closures were able to move. Resurfacing work was taking place and the motorway was set to stay closed until 10:00.

Diversions remain in place and drivers are urged to plan ahead.

It was expected that two lanes will be first reopened on the clockwise section, with a one-lane closure remaining in place for further repairs, while the anti-clockwise closure was expected to be in place until lunchtime.

National Highways said that as well as damage to the central reservation and the beer, there were also several ruptured fuel tanks from the collision, resulting in a large amount of diesel spilled across the carriageway.

North West Ambulance Service said three people had been taken to hospital for further treatment, while six others were assessed for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, there were two collisions on the M62 earlier also causing delays.
