Weather forecast - where will the best view be?

One of the most spectacular solar eclipses the UK has seen for decades is taking place on Wednesday 12 August.

From around 18:00 BST, the Moon will begin moving across the face of the Sun, creating a partial solar eclipse across the UK.

At its peak, around 90% of the Sun will be covered from London. In Cornwall, as much as 95% of the Sun could be obscured.

Depending on where you are in the UK, it will peak between 19:02 and 19:16 BST.

The UK is stuck in the middle of two different weather systems.

High pressure lies across much of continental Europe with low pressure and weather fronts out towards the north of the Atlantic.

This means contrasting fortunes.

High pressure is expected to bring generally dry and settled conditions across much of the UK, with a hot and sunny day forecast for most.

That means clear skies should give many a good view of the eclipse.

However, across some parts of north Wales, northern England and especially Scotland and Northern Ireland, areas of cloud could push their way through between 18:00 and 19:00 BST.

Across some parts of western Scotland and in towards the north and west of Northern Ireland, we see cloud bring some outbreaks of rain.

There may be some cloud for those watching in Iceland, the best of any gaps in the north, with rain in the south.

For Spain and Portugal the view is looking near perfect with clear skies.

The Sun will be very low in the western sky during the eclipse so ideally find somewhere with a clear, unobstructed view towards the west - somewhere high up and away from trees and buildings.

It is the closest thing to a total eclipse the UK will see for quite some time - and definitely one worth watching.
